TOUR OF THE GRANOFF MUSIC CENTER
AT TUFTS UNIVERSITY

FEATURING SPEAKER(S):

Tony Hoover & Matt Moore– Acoustica, Sound and AV Consultants for the Granoff Music Center

DESCRIPTION:

The Granoff Music Center at Tufts University was many years in design and construction, opening in February 2007 to a fantastically-appreciative faculty and student body.

The music faculty has graciously invited the ASA/GBC for a visit. In their words," From the new classrooms, practice rooms, rehearsal spaces, and recital halls, everything in the center was designed with exquisite attention to detail."

In 55,000 square feet of acoustically engineered space, the center houses a box office; three classrooms of 65, 35, and 25 seats; 20 faculty offices; a multimedia lab; 12 practice rooms, including one for percussion; five teaching studios with grand pianos; ensemble rehearsal areas, including a two-story space that doubles as a recital hall; new, high-tech quarters for the Lilly Music Library; a world music room, home to collections of Asian and African instruments; and a sky-lit atrium that can serve as a reception area.

The crown jewel is the 300-seat Distler Performance Hall. The department chair, Professor Joseph Auner, calls it "a big, resonant space that keeps the sound alive" and "the best small recital hall in the Boston area."

We will tour the facility, discuss the design, and attend Applied Student Recitals, all in an evening's celebration of architectural acoustics. Our guides will be Tony Hoover and Matt Moore, who served as the Center's acoustical and AV system consultants.

After the tour, we invite everyone to stay to watch the Applied Student Recitals where members of the Tufts Applied Music (Private Study) Program perform their semester recital. This event is free and open to the public and entire Tufts community. No tickets or advance reservations are required to attend.

More information on the performance hall can be found at http://www.tufts.edu/musiccenter/
