UNDERWATER NOISE: NOT JUST THE MILITARY'S PROBLEM |
|
FEATURING SPEAKER(S): |
DESCRIPTION: In the past five years, the U.S. maritime research community began an enterprise that began in Europe almost 20 years earlier. January of 2005 marked the delivery of the first quieted U.S. Research Vessel (R/V), the NOAA ship FRV OCSAR DYSON. The second quieted R/V, the HUGH R. SHARP, was delivered to the University of Delaware one year later. Both were designed to meet the 1995 International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) underwater noise requirement, as specified in their document CRR209. The acoustical design of both ships was performed by the Billerica, MA based-firm, Noise Control Engineering. The lecture will give brief introduction to underwater noise quantification & measurement, as well as elements of a noise control program for quiet ships including noise control treatments. The acoustic design of the OSCAR DYSON and the R/V SHARP will also be presented along with results from recent acoustic sea trials. |
