Acoustical Society of America

Greater Boston Chapter
October 16th Meeting Notice

TOPIC:

DESCRIPTION:

According to Dick Lyon, when designers set out to produce a new product, product sound quality is the "new guy on the block", taking a back seat to issues like structural integrity, heat management, aesthetics, and ease of use. Most often, sound quality is dealt with after the prototype has been produced, almost in an "oops, we need to do something about the noise", kind of way. This approach relegates sound quality to noise control and limits the options available to designers.

In his new book, "Designing for Product Sound Quality", Dick examines the concept of product sound quality and discusses how metrics and jury testing can be used to define sound quality for a particular product. He then describes the various ways in which mechanisms generate noise energy, and how structures radiate that energy, in order to give designers insight into the important considerations and stumbling blocks that should be part of the design process. This evening Dick Lyon will discuss the impetus for this new book, the difficulties in acousticians becoming a part of the design team, and how he views the role of this book in assisting that "new kid on the block". Books will be available for purchase, signed personally for you. The special discounted price is $65.00, payable with cash or check.

DINNER MENU:

Chicken breast cut up in a salad of artichoke hearts and lemon/garlic dressing with a wild rice salad, grilled veggies, rolls and a nice assortment of cookies for dessert. Beverages will include sparkling water and soda with the dinner. Dessert wines will be served after the presentation and during the book signing.

COST: $10 per person.
